THE battle for CBD workers’ coffee fix is on with a boutique and franchised cafe set to open within the Icon Ipswich precinct.
Cafe chain the Coffee Club have signed a seven-year lease in the Icon Ipswich tower, while Ipswich independent cafe Smith is opening a second store opposite the building on Brisbane St.
The Ipswich CBD is already developing a growing reputation for coffee culture, with the Top of Town already brimming with quality cafes.
Business is expected to boom with up to 1200 public servants expected to occupy the Icon tower.
Smith owner Donna Waters said the second cafe will focus on attracting the city workers and the lunch crowd, opening between Monday and Friday during business hours.
The cafe will retain the 1920’s style of the building, incorporating a Melbourne coffee bar vibe and could be open by early December.
She said the opportunity the Icon Ipswich development offers was too good to miss and comes off the success of the Roderick St cafe opened earlier this year.
Its popularity proved Ms Waters theory that Ipswich coffee drinkers are after more unique flavours from the cup of coffee.
“I’ve always liked the centre of town and Bell St. It’s got so much potential and that just seals it, and all the rest of the development,” she said.
Ms Waters said the Coffee Club and her own Smiths cafe offer customers two different experiences.
“I think we provide a different service and product. There will be people that want the Coffee Club and what they offer and we offer something really different.”
The Coffee Club will join IPN Medical, as major retail anchors on the ground floor of ICON Ipswich, Leighton Properties Queensland General Manager Brian McGuckin said.
“The Coffee Club has committed to a seven-year lease for a 154sqm tenancy on the ground level in Tower I, located on Brisbane Street,” he said.
“The Coffee Club is an ideal tenant for the building which was always designed to create a mixed-use, business and lifestyle community in the heart of the Ipswich CBD.
“The signing of a national operator of its calibre is a strong endorsement for the tower, and this particular retail store will be among one of a handful to unveil an all-new look for the brand.
“It marks significant investment in the area, activating the space and we’re working on securing several other retail tenants over the coming months, adding to the overall lifestyle of the precinct.”
